Greek plays were put on at annual festivals at the beginning of spring, the season of Dionysusoften for as many as 15, spectators at once. The story of Oedipus has given birth to innumerable fascinating variations, but we should not forget that this play is one of the variations, not the original story itself.
Nonetheless, we still try to read it, and we often misunderstand it by thinking of it in terms of the categories and assumptions of our own arts. Ancient Greek myth — the theme of most tragedies — not only touched members of the audience individually, but drew them together as well.
Antigone Antigone concerns the events after the deaths of her brothers Eteocles and Polyneices and her decision to bury Polyneices despite the decree of Creon, the new ruler of Thebes, that the body remain unburied as a lesson to traitors. Ultimately, however, these same heroic flaws destroy the persons whom they once made great.
To learn the truth, Oedipus sends for the only living witness to the murder, a shepherd. On his return, Creon announces that the oracle instructs them to find the murderer of Laius, the king who ruled Thebes before Oedipus. That is to say, they were not originally written to be performed on a single occasion. Throughout this mythic story of patricide and incest, Sophocles emphasizes the irony of a man determined to track down, expose, and punish an assassin, who turns out to be himself.

Information that the audience needs to understand the plot is allowed to emerge gradually through conversation between the characters. The Sphinx challenges Oedipus with her riddle: Even Aristotle recognized the importance of character development to Sophoclean studies.
Oedipus has already sent his brother-in-law, Creon, to the oracle to learn what to do.
Again, Jocasta advises him not to worry about prophecies. The long passages of monologue, familiar from Aeschylean drama, are now replaced by dialogue.
Written after Antigone, the play for which it might be seen as a kind of prequel, Oedipus at Colonus seems not to look forward to the suffering that envelops that play but back upon it, as though it has already been surmounted.
Oedipus attempts to gain advice from Jocasta, the queen; she encourages him to ignore prophecies, explaining that a prophet once told her that Laius, her husband, would die at the hands of their son.
Sophocles lived a long life, but not long enough to witness the downfall of his Athens. In fact, the messenger himself gave Oedipus to the royal couple when a shepherd offered him an abandoned baby from the house of Laius.
